The entire team at The Digger Collective know that working with heavy machinery can be very dangerous. Accidents can and do happen, a recent one for us being the discovery of a sinkhole in the middle of a perfectly flat field with no signs of soft ground. This almost caused a rollover of our 24 tonne Excavator and gave our operator a fairly big fright. Knowing what to do in this situation meant that the machine and operator were recovered from the bog with no harm to person or property, steps were then taken to isolate the area from any further machine movements.
As well as complying with the OHS (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015), there are also standard operating procedures that need to be followed, and these can change with every machine and operation. Simple things like hi-vis protective clothing, having experienced machine operators, planning and project coordination can make all the difference between a near miss and a tragedy.
